What to Expect

I visited Europe in 2023 for 2 weeks at Christmas and Paris was my first stop. Visiting Paris at Christmas time was truly magical. The city was decorated with lights and festive decorations, and Paris Christmas markets were stocked with mulled wine and roasted chestnuts.

I was there a week before Christmas, and I found that it wasn’t as crowded as I expected it to be, except on the weekends when tourists and locals were out and about.

The weather was chilly but not too cold, making it perfect for spending the day walking around and soaking in Paris.

You’ll find beautiful Christmas window displays at the Galeries Lafayette, ice skating rinks, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy delicious French holiday treats at the Tuileries Christmas Market, Notre Dame Christmas Market, and the Hôtel de Ville Christmas Market.

Don’t forget to take a Seine River cruise and visit famous landmarks like the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, and the Eiffel Tower. Paris during the holiday season offers a magical experience.

Best Time to Go to Paris to See the Christmas Markets

I was in Paris a week before Christmas, and it surprisingly wasn’t as busy as I thought it would be.

It wasn’t overwhelming, except on the weekends when there were definitely more locals and tourists out.

You’ll definitely want a heavier jacket but it was comfortable enough to spend the day outside without feeling like you need to get out of the cold.

Christmas markets in Paris usually open in late November and run through early January.

We spent over $1,000 per plane ticket because we booked it for the week before Christmas returning a day before New Year’s. You can easily avoid having such an expensive ticket by either leaving after New Year’s or going in early December or even November.

Average weather in Paris during November and December can be quite mild compared to other parts of Europe. In November, temperatures typically range from 5°C to 11°C (41°F to 52°F), and in December, they usually range from 3°C to 7°C (39°F to 47°F). While it’s a bit chilly, it’s generally not freezing, which makes exploring the markets more enjoyable.

If you want to avoid the biggest crowds, I’d visit during the weekdays in early to mid-December. You’ll get to experience all the festivities without feeling overwhelmed by the people.
