Lugano might just be Switzerland’s most effortlessly elegant city that makes for an amazing day trip from many locations.
Whether you’re coming in from Lake Como, Zurich, Interlaken, or even Milan, it’s easy to get there and explore the town in a day.
I ended my Switzerland trip here after a week of hiking through alpine towns, and it immediately felt different.
It is a quiet, elegant town that feels more Italian than Swiss.
I spent 3 nights there but to be honest, everything I really wanted to do could have been done in a day.
I walked the cobblestone streets of Old Town, wandered along the lake, walked the Olive Trail, and ate some delicious food and gelato by the water.
Regardless of where you’re coming from, getting there is easy by train or car.
Here’s how to spend one day in Lugano – what to do, what to see, and how to make the most of a short visit.

Is Lugano Worth Visiting for a Day Trip?
If you’re already planning a Switzerland itinerary packed with mountains, hiking, and fast-paced sightseeing, Lugano is 100% worth fitting in for a slower-paced day or two to catch your breath.
I visited after a week of alpine towns like Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen, and Lugano felt like just the “vacation after my vacation” I needed before heading home.
The lake views, palm trees, and Italian-style streets gave me just enough to explore without needing to rush.
So if you’re craving a reset day mid-trip (without feeling like you’re wasting time), Lugano is definitely worth a visit.
Where to Stay if You’re Spending the Night
If you’re planning to stay overnight in Lugano, here are a few options to fit different budgets and travel styles:
Budget-Friendly:
Hotel Pestalozzi Lugano – Affordable, clean, and within walking distance of Old Town and the lake. Great if you’re keeping things simple but still want to be central.
Mid-Range:
Continental Parkhotel Lugano – This was my home base, and I’d stay there again. It’s just across from the train station, which made arriving and departing really easy. It’s a bit of a walk to Old Town, but it was worth it! My room had stunning views over the lake and city, and the hotel grounds felt peaceful and tucked away.
Luxury:
Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola – If you’re treating yourself, this place feels like a retreat. Just steps from the lake with lush gardens and gorgeous views.
What to Do in Lugano for One Day
1. Wander Through Lugano’s Old Town
Start your day slow walking around Old Town and grabbing a coffee and breakfast before heading out for the day.
Lugano’s Old Town is comprised of pastel buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, great shopping, and little piazzas that invite you to sit and stay awhile.
This is where you’ll really feel the Italian influence. The architecture is more Mediterranean than Swiss Alpine.
You don’t need long here, an hour or so is plenty unless you want to spend longer shopping, but it’s the perfect way to kick off your Lugano day trip without feeling like you’re rushing to the next thing.
2. Hike the Olive Tree Path
Walking this trail was my favorite part of visiting Lugano.
The Olive Tree Trail winds along the lake between Lugano and Gandria. It’s an easy stroll and doable for all fitness levels.
The views are beautiful – calm water, olive groves, stone walls – and then, you come across Gandria which is a small lakeside village that feels forgotten by time but lively.
I walked about three miles out and then turned around, which gave me a peaceful morning stroll without taking up my entire afternoon.
You don’t need to do the whole thing to enjoy it. It’s easy, mostly flat, and an easy walk if you want something scenic that doesn’t feel like a “hike.”
3. Have Lunch In Lugano
You’ll find plenty of restaurants along the lake, and while the views are great, the restaurants tend to lean more touristy.
I ate at Spaghetti Store Ristorante Pizzeria and Mary Pizzeria Bar Ristorante and they were both very good if you’re looking for convenience and a view, but head a few blocks in for some equally as delicious options.
A great option is Osteria Trani, a cute contemporary Italian restaurant in the winding streets of Lugano with delicious pasta dishes and a more local vibe.
My favorite meal in Lugano was at Vitti Restaurant & Cocktails a few blocks inland from the lake. I had the carbonara, which was probably the best I’ve ever had.
The atmosphere leaned toward professional. It seemed as though there were groups there for lunch meetings or folks on their lunch break.
It was a polished, local spot. Definitely a place I’d go back to.
For another great local option, try Ristorante La Tinera, a spot known for Ticinese food like polenta, pastas, and hearty comfort dishes.
5. Ride the Funicular to Mount Brè
After lunch, ride the funicular up to Mount Brè to have a panoramic view of Lake Lugano.
There are a couple of ways you can do this to make the most of your day but it completely depends on your travel style.
If you like having activities pre-planned for you and want to make the most of your one day in Lugano, I’d recommend the 4.5-Hour Monte Bré Visit tour that includes a funicular ride to Mount Brè, a boat cruise on Lake Lugano, plus a visit to the Hermann Hesse Museum.
It’s ideal if you want to cover a lot in just one morning or afternoon without figuring out logistics yourself.
But if you’re someone who prefers a looser plan and wants to explore at your own pace, booking just the funicular ride is easy too.
To visit on your own:
- Head to Cassarate-Funicolare Station
- Buy a ticket at the station or check schedules online (about 10 minutes up to the top)
- Once there, enjoy the views, grab a drink, or do a short trail before heading back down

6. Rent A Boat On Lugano Lake
If the weather’s good and if you have time left in your day, rent a boat to take out on Lake Lugano.
This is a self driving the boat, no license or captain needed.
It’s just you, the lake, and an hour of freedom on the water.
You can cruise at your own pace, loop around some of the shoreline villages, or just anchor, tan, and soak in the scenery.

7. Grab a Final Drink or Gelato Before You Go
End your day with some gelato, a coffee, or a glass of wine by Lake Lugano.
There are plenty of spots near the waterfront where you can grab a treat and take one last stroll along the water.
Wrapping Up Your Day Trip to Lugano
Lugano was the perfect way to wind down my Switzerland trip after a week of rigorous hikes, but Lugano is also a perfect day trip if you’re coming from Lake Como or Milan.
You don’t need a packed itinerary here. Just give yourself a day to wander the lakefront, eat something delicious, and maybe do some shopping.
This is the perfect location for a reset day, whether it’s at the end of your trip or just a quick hop over from Italy.
