8 Best Bergen Norway Restaurants

Bergen, Norway so far has been my favorite place that I’ve traveled to.

This city, Norway’s second-largest, is surrounded by stunning fjords, making every meal feel like a scenic event.

Every meal I ate was so good, and it’s tough to choose just one standout restaurant in Bergen.

You may be asking, “Kate, isn’t Norway known for seafood? You don’t like seafood!” It’s true, I don’t. But don’t worry, because my seafood-loving boyfriend, Chandler, was with me to ensure we thoroughly explored all seafood for this article.

After a long day of exploring Norway’s fjords, you might find yourself hungry and ready to dive into Bergen’s culinary scene.

Top 8 Best Bergen Norway Restaurants

1. Bryggeloftet & Stuene

First up is a traditional Norwegian restaurant located on the old wharf, Bryggen.

Bryggeloftet & Stuene dates back to 1910 built along the Bryggen Harbor.

It’s one the oldest restaurants in Bergen and is run by the same family who established it in 1910.

This was my favorite spot to try traditional Norwegian cuisine such as different meat, game, and seafood dishes.

This is your spot if you are looking for popular dishes like Bergen fish soup or reindeer.

2. Pingvinen

This gastropub in downtown Bergren features traditional Norwegian food with a modern touch in a casual setting.

This restaurant in Bergen was a great place to stop in for lunch and a beer or two before we hit the shops.

They feature several locally produced beers that change out seasonally.

3. Jaja

While we were in Bergen, we stayed at the Moxy Hotel by Marriott which was located just outside the city center.

Just a couple blocks away was Jaja.

This restaurant so was delicious that we went here a couple of times.

Opened in 2019, this restaurant features different street foods from all around the world.

It was great for a late-night snack or a meal if we weren’t going into downtown Bergen that day.

4. Restaurant 1877

Open Mon-Sat 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

If you are looking for an elevated Norwegian dining experience, Restaurant 1877 is where you’ll want to be.

Located just across from the fish market, this restaurant focuses on the Western Norwegian food culture.

With a commitment to using local produce, you will find the freshest ingredients.

You will have an unforgettable experience with the choice of an 8 or 5-course meal.

5. Trekroneren

When you are looking for what to eat in Bergen, you can’t visit without stopping at Trekroneren.

Here you can get a variety of high-quality sausages including the famous reindeer sausage.

It is also a Scandinavian tradition to top your dog with crispy, onions, and lingonberry jam.

I promise when you eat it, it just makes sense. This was one of my favorite things to eat in Bergen.

This is a great spot to stop when you are out walking around and not wanting to spend the time at a sit-down restaurant in Bergen.

6. Fjellskål Seafood Restaurant

While I treated myself to a spa treatment, Chandler treated himself to a second meal at Fjellskål Seafood Restaurant.

We went here for dinner one evening and it was so good he went back specifically for the creamed Bergen fish soup!

This restaurant is located right next to the Fish Market with a beautiful waterfront view of fjords and Bryggen across the water.

7. Colonialen Kranen

Colonialen Kranen was located right outside our hotel, Moxy by Marriott.

This restaurant has a beautiful 360 view of the harbor.

Colonialen Kranen sources food locally creating dishes from around the world.

8. Arti Danmarksplass

Open 3:00 pm – 10:00 pm

If one of the days you are in Bergen, you aren’t feeling like Norwegian cuisine and just want good food, I’d highly recommend stopping at Arti Danmarksplass.

It is a family-run Indian restaurant located just outside the city center of Bergen.

We went here twice while we were there.

Norwegian Culinary History

Seafood has always held a significant position in Norwegian diets.

With the harsh winters, hunting, and fishing were always reliable sources of food while plant based foods could only be found seasonally.

In the summer and fall, you can find fruits, vegetables, and grains.

Popular game to hunt were sheep, reindeer, pig, goose, and duck. All of these things you will still find in modern Norwegian dishes today.

The Famous Bergen Fish Market

You can’t go to Bergen without stopping at the Bergen Fish Market in the center of downtown.

Here you can buy fresh fish and they have several stands set up to sample the local catch.

We tried fresh whale here which if you’re wondering tasted similar to summer sausage.

The market is not only for seafood!

You can find things such as fruits and vegetables and other handmade products, similar to a farmers market in the States.

Tip

If you love to cook, consider getting a rental such as Airbnb where you can have access to a kitchen to cook foods from the market. This will also save some money on eating out.

Every meal we had in Norway was seriously so delicious and definitely one of the trip’s highlights.

The combo of amazing food in Bergen, the jaw-dropping landscapes, and perfect weather made our visit unforgettable.

Every bite felt like a part of the adventure, whether we were diving into reindeer sausage or Chandler was trying every seafood dish he could find.
