So you’ve got your eyes set on booking your next trip to Bergen, Norway and you’re next step is securing your flights. When it comes to traveling, a stress-free flight and an easy experience in the airport is important.

In this guide, I will go through everything you need to know about the airports in Bergen.

How Many Airports are in Bergen

1. Bergen Airport (BGO)

The Bergen Airport is the international airport closest to downtown Bergen located about a 25-minute drive from downtown Bergen. If you are coming from outside the country this is probably the airport you will fly into.

2. Haugesund Airport (HAU)

Located 3 hours away from Bergen, the Haugesund Airport is the second closest airport to Bergen. If you want to kick off your trip diving into Viking history or visiting Utsira Island, consider flying into this airport.

3. Stavanger, Norway (SVG)

The Stavanger Airport is located about 4.5 from Bergen. Stavanger has many famous attractions such as the Kjeragbolten hike or taking a drive along the Ryfylke Scenic Route. It would be a great idea to fly into Stavanger and spend a couple of days here and drive up to Bergen. From there, you would book your flight out from the Bergen Airport.

Arriving at the Airport in Bergen

In this post, we are going to focus on Bergen Airport (BGO). Unless you are planning a road trip in Norway and will land somewhere else, this is the main international airport to fly into when traveling to Bergen, Norway.

When you fly into the airports in Bergen, make sure to get a window seat to see the fjords as you fly in!

Touching down in Bergen, surrounded by the beautiful landscape, I couldn’t help but feel so much excitement for the week ahead.

I can’t wait for you to experience that too.

We went through customs as we exited that plane. They had people at the exit stamping passports, which made for a quick exit from the airport.

No long customs lines! Can’t beat that.

We opted to exchange our money at the ATM.

We didn’t take out a lot of cash because the travel credit cards that we use have no foreign transaction fees allowing us to use our credit cards in most countries.

It’s always good to have some cash on you so I recommend taking $100-$200 out.

Bergen’s airport is not huge and it was easy to find our way out. There are only two floors.

If you check a bag, you’ll find baggage claim on the first floor by Arrivals.

We packed all carry-on and opted to do laundry halfway through the week.

Bergen Airport Terminals:

On the first floor of the Bergen Airport, you will find the domestic and international arrivals area as well as baggage claim. You will also go to the first floor to access all transportation whether you park your car, take the bus, jump on the light rail, or rent a car.

The second floor is where you’ll check in, drop off your bags, and go through security for all domestic and international flights. Once you get through security, you’ll be able to access the restaurants, shopping, and all other amenities the airport in Bergen has to offer.

Lounges:

There is one lounge located in the Bergen Airport, SAS Café Lounge after you get through security.

Parking:

At the airport in Bergen, they offer both short-term and long-term parking options. Their parking lots also offer designated spots for electric cars and physically challenged passengers.

Money Exchange:

You will be able to find the Money Exchange bureau on the first level in Arrivals. You can also exchange your money at any of the ATMs available which is what we did.

Hotels Near the Bergen Airport

There are several hotel options near the Bergen Airport if you have a flight cancellation or need to stay near the airport before your flight.

1. Clarion Hotel Bergen Airport

The Clarion Hotel is the only hotel that is connected to the Bergen Airport. If you have an early morning or don’t want to feel like you are being rushed, consider booking here.

2. Comfort Hotel Bergen Airport

While not directly connected to the airport in Bergen, Comfort Hotel is located within a 2-minute walking distance from BGO.

3. Scandic Flesland Airport

Located 0.5 miles from the Bergen Airport, the Scandic Flesland Airport hotel offers a more affordable option nearby. You can either walk to the airport or there is a bus stop located just outside the hotel.

4. Scandic Kokstad

The Scandic Kokstad hotel sits at the most affordable option located a mile away from the airport in Bergen. It’s not walkable but only a 5-minute drive to the airport.

Transportation from the Airport in Bergen

Car RentalS:

We opted to rent a car for our trip while we were in Bergen.

I will say that because we were in Bergen most of the time we could have saved money and only rented a car when we took day trips from Bergen as Bergen itself is extremely walkable.

In Norway, if you have a license issued by the U.S. you can rent a car for up to 3 months without needing to get an international driver’s license.

Inside the Bergen Airport, you will find the car rental companies on the first floor near Arrivals.

Driving in a new country can be nerve-wracking.

We found that driving in Norway is pretty much the same as driving in the States and you will be familiar with the road signage.

Some things you’ll notice that are different are:

Most of the cars are electric
The roads are a bit more narrow and the cars are smaller
There usually isn’t a center line
Lots of roundabouts

Bus:

There are two options when it comes to taking the bus from the airport in Bergen to your destination. ‘

Bergen Airport Bus – Flybusse
This bus will take you to downtown Bergen just about 20 minutes away. The nice thing about this option is that there are no other stops.

Buy a ticket:
You can find the bus stop on the first floor outside of Arrivals where you can purchase a bus ticket at the Bergen Airport Bus booth.

You can buy a ticket once you board the bus but there’s an additional fee of $2.82 (NOK 30).

Cost:
Adults: $10.81 one-way (NOK 115), $18.33 roundtrip (NOK 195).
Children / Senior / Student: $7.05 (NOK 75)

Schedule:
Monday to Friday: 7:08 am to 11:50 pm, every 15-20 minutes, and then 12:10 am, 12:30 am and 1:10 am, every 20 minutes.

Saturday: 9:53 am to 09:10 pm, every 15-20 minutes, and then 10:10 pm, 10:40 pm, 11:10 pm.

Sunday: 9:08 am to 7:38 pm, and then 8:23 pm, 9:23 pm, 10:10 pm, 11:10 pm, 11:30 pm.
Skyss – 23 Bus Line
This option will take you to downtown within 52 minutes. If you plan on going straight downtown, I’d recommend taking the Bergen Airport bus as the Skyss bus makes several stops.

Only take this bus if your final destination is one of the other stops this bus makes.

Take note that this bus does not run on Saturday and Sunday.

You’ll find the bus stop in area G, outside of Arrivals on the first floor.

Stops:
Kokstad v/Scandic, Sandslislusen, Dolvik Terminal, Soreide, Lodderfjord Terminal, Storavatnet Terminal and Straume Terminal

But a Ticket:
For the Skyss bus, you will buy your ticket on board the bus.

Cost:
Cost varies depending on your stop. You can see pricing for the Skyss bus on their website.

Schedule:
Monday to Friday: 7:08 am to 6:08 pm, every 30 minutes.

Light Rail:

Taking the light rail is the most affordable way to get to downtown Bergen. You can find the light rail stop outside the airport terminal.

Stops:
Bergen Airport, Kokstadflaten, Birkelandsskiftet term, Sandslivegen, Rastolen, Lagunen, Mardalen, Nesttun sentrum, Nesttun terminal, Fantoft, Sletten, Danmarks plass, Bystasjonen, Byparken.

Buy a Ticket:
You will be able to purchase a ticket on the Skyss Ticket app.

Cost:
Adults: $3.57 (NOK 38)
Children and Seniors: $1.79 (NOK 19)

Schedule:
Monday to Friday: 5:10 am to 11:52 am
Saturday: 5:10 am to 12:50 am
Sunday: 5:10 am to 11:55 am.

Taxi

You can hop in a taxi outside of the airport terminal.

This is a more expensive option, however, you’ll skip the crowded bus and making multiple stops. A taxi will be able to take you directly to your destination.

Cost:
Usually ranges from $37-$37 (NOK 400-500)

Rideshare:
If you are looking for an Uber or Lyft experience, you can use Bergen’s rideshare app Talixo. Using this app, you’re able to book your car in advance and have a private ride to your destination.

Transfers

If you are looking for an easy option to get to and from your destination, you can book a one-way or roundtrip car ride directly on the Bergen Airport website.

I typically wouldn’t recommend a transfer because these usually run well over $100.

However, If you are coming with a large group and want to stay together, this could be a good option if you are splitting the cost.

The Best Time to Travel to Bergen

The best time to travel to Bergen entirely depends on the experience you’re looking for!

Are you looking to go at Christmas time and see the Gingerbread Town and go to the Bergen Christmas markets?

Perhaps you are a skier and want to take a day trip to Voss, Norway to ski at one of the country’s most famous ski resorts.

Are you outdoorsy and want to spend all your time hiking or going kayaking in the fjords?

Take some time to think about the experiences you want to have.

If you are looking to skip the crowds, consider booking in the shoulder seasons that still offer great weather, May to June and August to September.

I went in September and the weather was perfect, leaves were starting to change color but it was still warm enough to hike and be outdoors.

The warmest months to travel to Bergen are May to September, with temperatures typically ranging from 11ºC (51ºF) to 17ºC (62ºF).

The coldest months, October to April, experience temperatures ranging from -0,8ºC (17.6ºF) to 9ºC (48ºF).
