Trying to figure out how to spend one day in Bergen? I’ve been there!
Whether you’re on a long layover or taking a quick day trip from Oslo, Bergen is the perfect place to explore in just a day.
I’ve also included a hotel option if you plan on staying a night.
It’s small enough to hit the highlights but packed with history, amazing views, and incredible food.
After visiting myself, I fine-tuned this itinerary to make sure you experience the absolute best of Bergen—without feeling rushed.
From wandering the colorful Bryggen Wharf to tasting fresh seafood at the fish market and even catching a glimpse of Norway’s breathtaking fjords, this guide has you covered.
I’ve also included my top tips for making the most of your time and the easiest ways to book must-do experiences.
Let’s dive into the ultimate one-day Bergen itinerary!
Morning
Breakfast in Bergen:
First stop: coffee and pastries at Godt Brød, a local bakery known for its organic, fresh-baked goods.
This local bakery is known for its commitment to quality and sustainability. This cozy café has been serving Bergen since 1995.
Since it’s located right in the city center, it’s an easy first stop before exploring for the day.
Explore Bryggen:
After breakfast, head to Bryggen, the city’s iconic, UNESCO-listed wharf.
The history of Bryggen is fascinating. Dating back to the Hanseatic trading era, Bryggen was once a major hub for merchants—and many of the old wooden structures are still standing today.
I loved wandering through the narrow alleyways, popping into artisan shops, and imagining what this place must’ve been like centuries ago.
If you’re into history, consider taking a self-guided audio tour for deeper insight.
💡 Don’t Miss: I found some of the best local souvenirs in the little boutiques hidden inside the alleyways
✨ Take a self-guided audio tour when you walk around Bryggen ✨
Visit the Bergenhus Fortress Museum:
Before lunch, make your way to Bergenhus Fortress Museum, one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved stone castles.
The museum inside gives a great quick history lesson on Bergen’s military past, Viking connections, and World War II occupation.
I explored the museum in under an hour and entry was free. It’s a good activity to do right before lunch.
If you’re a history buff, start with the fortress grounds before heading inside—the medieval stone walls and harbor views are worth checking out.
Afternoon
Lunch in Bergen
Now that it’s the afternoon, you’ve probably worked up an appetite!
For lunch, skip the sit-down restaurants and grab Bergen’s most famous street food—a reindeer sausage from Trekroneren.
I’ll be honest, me and my American taste buds weren’t totally sure about this at first.
But after one bite (topped with lingonberry jam, mustard, and crispy onions), I was completely sold.
It’s sweet, smoky, and delicious.
The portions here are huge, so if you’re not super hungry, splitting one is totally an option.
Choose Your Afternoon Adventure: Fjord Cruise or Mount Fløyen
For the afternoon, you’ve got two amazing options depending on what kind of experience you want:
Option 1: Take a Fjord Cruise
Since Bergen is known as the Gateway to the Fjords, this is one of the best ways to see Norway’s famous landscapes.
Tour Options:
- Want to cruise on a Viking Ship? This 1.5-hour Viking ship tour is one of the most unique ways to experience Bergen’s fjords. >> Book it here!
- Short on time? This 1-hour Historic Landmarks Cruise covers all the highlights without feeling rushed. >> Book it here!
- Want the full fjord experience? This 3-hour sightseeing cruise takes you through some of Norway’s most breathtaking landscapes. >> Book it here!
Option 2: Take the Fløibanen Funicular to Mount Fløyen
For epic panoramic views over Bergen, ride the Fløibanen funicular up to Mount Fløyen.
At the top, you’ll find hiking trails, scenic viewpoints, and even a small café where you can grab a drink while taking in the views.
If you want a short and easy hike, there’s a quick 20-minute loop at the top with some beautiful lookouts.
When I was up there, I came across some friendly goats – maybe you’ll see them too!
Evening
Dinner at Bryggeriet Restaurant
For dinner, head to Bryggeriet Restaurant, a cozy spot right next to the Bergen Fish Market.
They serve fresh seafood, craft beer, and classic Norwegian dishes.
This restaurant is located over the water and has a beautiful view of the harbor and Bryggen from the tables.
The fish soup here is incredible (according to my boyfriend, I don’t like seafood!) —light, flavorful, and packed with fresh ingredients.
f you are a girly that’s always cold, I loved that most of the restaurants in Bergen had blankets dropped over the seats ready for use!
Visit the Bergen Fish Market
Before calling it a night, stop by the Bergen Fish Market, one of the city’s oldest and liveliest spots.
This market has been the hub for the city’s seafood trade since the 1200s.
You’ll find fresh seafood, local cheeses, and traditional Norwegian delicacies—even if you’re not buying anything, it’s fun to wander through and soak up the atmosphere and get some samples.
Stroll Bryggen’s Waterfront
At the end of the evening, take one last stroll along the waterfront in front of Bryggen.
Soak it all in before you have to depart.
Optional Nightcap: If you’re not ready to head back yet, grab a drink at Madam Felle, and sit on the terrace for a drink and views.
3 Tips for Staying in Bergen for One Day:
1. Stay Near the Bergen City Center
If you want to make the most out of your short time in Bergen, I recommend booking your accommodation close to the Bergen city center if you’re staying the night.
Located in Bryggen, Det Hanseatiske Hotel is a great option for a one day trip and they have free breakfast!
2. Purchase a Bergen Card:
I highly recommend getting a Bergen Card.
This card will give you free or discounted admission to most museums and attractions, along with free public transportation.
It’s an excellent way to save money and get around quickly.
3. Plan for Unpredictable Weather:
I definitely got caught in the rain a couple of times when I went to Bergen!
Bergen’s weather can be unpredictable, make sure you check the forecast before heading out for the day and make sure to bring an umbrella.
Wrapping Up
While you can easily spend several more days exploring Bergen, this itinerary packs in the city’s best highlights—without feeling rushed.
From wandering Bryggen’s historic wharf to tasting fresh seafood at the Fish Market and soaking in the views from Mount Fløyen or the fjords, one day in Bergen is just enough to fall in love with the city.
I hope this itinerary helps you make the most of your visit and makes you want to return and explore even more of Bergen!
